The biotechnology industry has spent much of the past 12 months working out the implications of what went on in the previous, roller-coaster year. On the scientific side, companies set about interpreting the raw data pouring out of the human genome project, the draft of which was published in 2000. There was much emphasis on finding proteins as the potential targets of new drugs. On the financial side, in spite of often diminished share prices, many companies continued in robust health after raising substantial sums in 2000.
