The sharp fall in interest rates that accompanied Greece's arrival in the eurozone in January has intensified competition in retail lending among Greece's leading commercial banks. Mortgage lending has become a battlefield, reflecting a switch to real estate by Greek investors in response to falling savings rates and a weakening stock market. Some Athens banks are offering mortgages at rates scarcely higher than the interbank borrowing rate.
