Macedonia's fragile centre-right coalition government has survived the potentially destabilising impact of the conflict last year in neighbouring Kosovo and its aftermath of heightened tensions between ethnic Slavs and Albanians in western Macedonia. The government's main policy aim is to sign a stability and association pact with the European Union this year that will gradually lead to integration with western Europe.
