Montenegro
July 10 2001
Montenegro's uneasy marriage with Serbia was laid bare during the political wrangling which preceded Belgrade's recent decision to pack former president Slobodan Milosevic off to trial at the Hague. That decision came just in time to persuade international donors to pledge $1.28bn to underpin the tottering Yugoslav economy. But the weeks of political infighting help to explain why rump Yugoslavia makes so little practical or political sense and why Montenegro, is pressing so hard to regain its freedom from a Serbia whose leaders are also now minded to accept autonomy just short of outright divorce.
