Slovakia
July 4 2001
Slovakia, Europe's youngest state, has closed the gap with its neighbours, both in terms of economic restructuring and negotiations to join the European Union. But economic reform has hurt the government's support, and the fruits of reform and its drive towards EU and Nato membership may come too late to help it at next year's election. There is still a real risk that Slovakia could take a backward step at those elections, which could slow down reform and damage the country's international ambitions.
